Construction of the new pedestrian bridge over the Nemunas River in Kaunas starts

September 9, 2024
At the end of 2021, the TEC Infrastructure team, together with KILD architects, successfully prepared and implemented the design of a bridge connecting Karaliaus Mindaugas Avenue and Nemunas Island. On 3 September, with the symbolic burial of a time capsule, the construction of the 258-meter-long pedestrian and cyclist bridge was officially launched in Kaunas. The bridge is expected to connect Nemunas Island with Žemąja Freda by the end of 2026.

According to Romas Dulieba, head of the TEC Infrastructure project’s construction organization, the steel bridge will be installed in sections, with work being carried out on both banks of the Nemunas. It will become a new landmark in Kaunas—the most modern pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Lithuania. TEC Infrastructure CEO Vaidas Laukaitis also attended the opening ceremony, where he, along with other participants, buried the symbolic time capsule. “TEC Infrastructure and KILD specialists have dedicated significant work and effort to enhancing the city’s beauty. We have designed two unique bridges, one of which has now begun construction, and the other will follow. Our team is strong, and we are proud to contribute to Kaunas’s development,” V. Laukaitis remarked during the event.

According to the Kaunas City Municipality, the new bridge will ensure convenient connections between key locations in the city: the Science Island Museum, Žalgiris Arena, Nemunas Island Park, and the planned Mikolas Konstantinas Čiurlionis Concert Centre on the opposite riverbank. However, this is not the sole reason for constructing the bridge. Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that the bridge is also crucial due to the ongoing urbanization on the left bank of the Nemunas, where a new residential block is under development.

The construction contract for the bridge is valued at EUR 14.4 million, with funding provided by the European Union and the City of Kaunas. The design of the bridge was completed by a team of TEC Infrastructure specialists and KILD architects (Petras Išora Lozuraitis, Ivane Ksnelashvili, D. Daunys). The construction work is being carried out by Kaunas Tiltai, under a contract signed at the end of winter.

The design of the bridge will resemble the smaller pedestrian bridge connecting Nemunas Island to I. Kantas Street. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
